Chalna is very famous in my home town, Madurai. When we go to buy briyani in hotels, they will provide either mutton chalna or chicken chalna as side dish. Its a very familiar dish there.
Ingredients:
Chicken – 200 gms (cut into cubes)
Onion – 1 (finely chopped)
Tomato – 2 (finely chopped)
Coconut – 1/4 of a full coconut ( grate it)
Cashews – 25 pieces
Coriander Powder – 1 tbsp
Chilli Powder - 3 tbsp
Cumin Powder – 1 tbsp
Tumeric Powder – 1 tsp
Ginger Garlic Paste – 1/2 tbsp
Salt – to taste
Cooking Oil
Cooking Instructions:
Grind grated coconut and cashews to a fine paste by adding enough water.
Heat oil in a cooker and add onion, tomatoes and ginger garlic paste and stir fry it. Add chicken to it and stir fry it a while. Now add coriander powder, cumin powder, chilly powder, turmeric powder and salt to it and fry it a while until the raw smell leaves off. Add enough water to it and Close the lid of the cooker now and wait until the chicken is well cooked. Open the cooker and add grinded paste to it and let it to cook in a simmer flame for a while until it attains chalna consistency.
Side Dish: Briyani, Parotta, Rice
